Well, the thing about large legitimate groups, ones built by willing individuals anyhow, is that it's usually fucking easy to tell who's who. It's no different for members of these groups to identify each other, than it is for a German to identify a German, or a Korean to identify a Korean. You recognize your own culture when you encounter it, even if it lacks a label.
