If you have plenty of astral energy you'll be able to do it though.
Also I theorize that an extremely advanced form of AP which I kind of did once is also possible where you separate your astral body from the physical one AND control both at once. It's the most crazy experience I've ever had… two dicks, 4 arms, 4 legs, etc. all under my control. You can feel having two bodies at once and operate them independently and receive input and send out commands from both bodies at once.
I can hardly make you understand how mind blowing and experience that is. It is really intense and you feel a strong burning as well.
Normally though for AP you have to shut off the physical body.
You can also remote view / do a weak form of AP while your physical body is active, there's an example of that on /astral/ if you go to the oldest threads on there, where a guy is in the astral and he's in his physical body at same time so he's using his physical body to type out and explain what he's doing in the astral.
Factors which prevent astral projection relate to distractions. Sensory deprivation enhances your ability to AP. Keep a very clean room and use sodium bicarbonate to capture smells as well and so on. Make sure there's no dust, I clean the fuck out of my room, air it out, etc.
You want to get yourself comfortable as fuck. Usually some parts of my body also go numb especially if I have an arm or leg elevated or being crushed in some way depending upon how I lay.
Then you create thoughtforms and power them with astral energy (your emotions, which are focused in the manner discussed in the synchronicity article on montalk.net). With the thoughtforms you create an astral space… and I use thoughtformed numbers to turn off the audio in my mind and think in visuals. Then you see that room or place you're projecting to and you look around and more of it should unfold and if not don't worry. Project the astral body to project your consciousnes into the scene and then walking around. Lets say it's a room with a single door. Just keep loading it up properly until you're fully there and you will find yourself in that room. Everything presumably at that point is stuff you projected, if not, then you're already there but if yes then it's just a matter of opening that door and seeing what's behind it … and going through it. That will get you to the astral.
Then you can go and explore and do whatever you want in the astral.
