His mixture of skepticism and the occult is quite useful, he's been a doorway for a lot of people into the subject, myself included but he's not a be all and end all guru or anything.
He was a polymath and kept up to date on a lot of different subjects so he's useful to look at the occult in a "modern" context, although a lot of the ideas he used like the left/right brain thing are now out of date but such is science.
He's also partially responsible for discordianism getting so big, mostly thanks to his illuminatus trilogy.
I don't think he ever spread magic as such, more leading people into exploring it themselves. The books he wrote with exercises were more aimed at broadening peoples understanding of their minds and biases rather than traditional magic.
